What is the New Zealand Investor Visa?

New Zealand Permanent Residency and New Zealand Citizenship are currently in high demand from international investors from the US, UK, Europe and Singapore and many other countries.

Luckily the New Zealand Investor Visa category is still open for applications – most New Zealand visas are unobtainable due to the border restrictions which underpin New Zealand’s successful COVID control strategy.

As Principal of Mobile Relocation, I’ve worked with many investors moving to New Zealand, and here are their most commonly asked questions:

How can I get New Zealand Permanent Residency?*

Immigration investment can qualify for you for Permanent Residency in New Zealand, and later New Zealand Citizenship.

Permanent residency via the New Zealand Investor Visa is gained by investing in equity, bonds and new residential property for commercial return.

There are two categories of New Zealand Investor Visas:

Investor 2 Visa requires:

  • investment of NZ$10 million for 3 years
  • minimum stay in New Zealand of 88 days over 3 years

Investor 2 Visa requires:

  • investment of NZ$3,000,000 for 4 years
  • minimum stay in New Zealand of 438 days over 4 years
  • the applicant to have at least 3 years business experience, meet English language requirements and be a maximum of 65 years of age

Is New Zealand really the right place for me and my family?

New Zealand has a worldwide reputation for its friendly people and breathtaking scenery.

But living and working in a country is quite different to being a tourist.  If you have a family, finding the right neighbourhood, housing and schooling will be key to overall happiness.

If you’re looking to work, or set up a business, linking into local networks and business culture are important to succeeding in population of 5 million people where personal relationships are so important.

We strongly advise anyone seeking New Zealand Permanent Residence to establish clear goals around their reasons for wanting to live in New Zealand.  Here’s what some of our New Zealand Investor Visa clients have told us about why they made the move:

  • A better work/life balance
  • Easier access to an outdoors lifestyle
  • A schooling system that values character as well as academics
  • Retirement in a beautiful place
  • Adventure!

In the words of one family: “There have been ups and downs, but the overall experience has been super-positive. Try to focus on the end game to make the most of living in this amazing country.”

How do I get started?

Relocating to New Zealand is a big decision.  There are so many critical emotional, logistical, and human elements to moving countries, and getting settled – truly settled – into the life you envision.

Our New Zealand Investor Visa clients realise that the first step is making a Move to NZ Plan based on their specific needs and aspirations.

This anchors you back into the goals you’ve set and provides a pathway forward.  Then you’ll need to connect with reputable and knowledgeable advisors and suppliers who can ensure the plan is executed.
